An Interview with Tony Tomasek of Gavish Real Estate

Tony Tomasek is a realtor with Gavish Real Estate, an 18-year-old business in Las Vegas, NV. Curious about what it takes to run a real estate business in Sin City, we sat down with him to talk about his experiences.

In a city as glamorous as Las Vegas, there must be plenty of great real estate companies for a realtor to get involved with. What made you choose to start your own instead?

I have a passion for real estate as I found out through my years as a real estate investor and mentor. In particular, I found great enjoyment in helping people attain their dream of homeownership and helping sellers find a way to sell their home. In some cases, I bought their home. In others, I helped them find the end buyer. I feel that becoming a Realtor put me in the position to focus on doing the things that I loved about my past business as a full time job. The old saying that if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life, is certainly applicable to this business for me.

It certainly sounds like you enjoy what you do! Where did that passion come from?

I grew up following a successful real estate investor around. My father was a builder and small developer. So you could say that my training in real estate probably started at the age of 8. Once I graduated high school in 1995, we started a business flipping properties together. During that time I attended college and got my Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing. I can’t tell you how valuable really understanding marketing is in any business. This knowledge was what allowed me to continue to be a successful investor through the recent real estate downturn. To say the least, I am familiar with what it takes to get a home sold in a challenging environment.

You said that you know how to sell a home in a challenging environment. Was that the biggest challenge you’ve had to face so far?

The biggest challenge I have faced so far is establishing a business in a new part of the country. Five years ago this city was new to me. It took me several years of following the market, networking and really becoming an expert on how this real estate market works before I felt I could successfully launch a business here. Luckily I was in a position to put in the time and effort it took to do those things!

You must feel that it’s been worth it, or else you wouldn’t have kept going! What has been the most rewarding part of running this company?

The most rewarding part of running your own company is that you are responsible for your own success. When you are successful, it’s due to your own hard work and diligence. The flip side of that is that you have to be your own cheerleader and motivator. No one tells you that you have to be at work, or get this or the other task done. It’s all up to you.

What can you tell us about your law firm’s history and focus?

John Brendan Ebert: My company was formed in 1979 and I have been practicing law since October, 1977. The focus of my practice has been on criminal and civil defense matters along with family law matters.

Please tells us about your credentials.

John Brendan Ebert: I am part of the legal profession and a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (PACDL), the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), American Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association, Philadelphia Bar Association and the Gloucester County Bar Association.

Do you take courses, even after being a practicing attorney since 1977?

John Brendan Ebert: I take a minimum of 12-16 CLE (continuing law education) credits in PA and NJ each year. I will normally acquire these credits all at one time, as I take two to three days to attend these functions.

What are the main services that Pennsylvania Criminal Defense, P.C. provides?

John Brendan Ebert: For criminal matters, our services include representation from the point of arrest through the conclusion of trial and/or all appeals.

What does your job mostly entail?

John Brendan Ebert: I am often called upon to surrender a client when there is a warrant out for his/her arrest, which I arrange around the needs of my client.

Are there any particular company success stories that spring to mind?

John Brendan Ebert: I have never had a client convicted after a trial-by-jury in a rape case, and have never had a client sentenced to the death penalty.

What kind of goals do you have in mind for your office over the next few years?

John Brendan Ebert: The goal of my office is to increase in size each year through successful representation of each client, whom I represent as though his/her case was the most important in my office.

Has the growth of technology and the internet changed how you conduct your business?

John Brendan Ebert: I used to conduct business through an answering service, followed by voicemail, beeper and on to cellular phone technology. I am now able to reply immediately to clients questions or concerns.

Finally, how do you go about marketing your law firm?

John Brendan Ebert: I originally used the telephone book yellow pages to do my advertising. I currently use online advertising with great success and with cost efficiency.

How was it that you found your niche?

Cameron Allison: I am a military spouse and experienced a tough move and realized there is a need for the site.

That certainly gives you an insider perspective. Have you worked with the same business plan all along, or have you had to alter it over time?

Cameron Allison: Yes I created a business plan and have followed through with it. I have surpassed my original plan and have had to adjust to formulate a new plan.

What has the biggest surprise been so far?

Cameron Allison: I have been very surprised how small the military entrepreneurial network is. I have met the owners of big military organizations that I didn’t think I would ever meet and they have been so humble and nice.

Anyone who has ever run their own business knowns that it can be disappointing from time to time. What has been the biggest disappointment for you as CEO of Military Town Advisor?

Cameron Allison: The biggest disappointment has been how slow things have gone. I didn’t realize that products for my site would take so long to develop. It took over a year to get the site developed and up and running.

Businesses can also be frustrating. What is the most frustrating part for you?

Cameron Allison: The hardest part has been getting people to leave reviews on the site. Everyone who finds out about the site thinks it’s a great idea and says there is a need for it, however they would rather read the reviews than leave them. It’s a ‘pay it forward’ method so I assumed more people would take the time to leave reviews to help out fellow military families.

What is the biggest reward for you?

Cameron Allison: I love that I am helping other military families. It feels good to know that I can provide a free resource and employ military spouses.
